Outdoor weddings are incredibly romantic and provide stunning backdrops for saying “I Do.” But an elegant outdoor ceremony also requires an eye for guest comfort and a solid Plan B in case Mother Nature takes a turn. If you follow these top planning tips, you’ll have a stress-free stroll down the aisle.
Planning an elegant NC outdoor wedding ceremony
In the Triad region of North Carolina, you’ll find pleasant weather for spring and early summer weddings, April through June. July and August can be quite warm, but things start to cool down in September. Fall weddings are at their height in October and the weather can continue to be mild into November.
At Oakhaven, you’ll find three stunning outdoor wedding locations, each offering a distinct backdrop with the season. Spring is always a celebration of green rolling hills, flowering trees, and a variety of blooms. Fall is captured in spectacular fashion in front of Oakhaven’s Signature Oak. But no matter the season, the following tips will help ensure ceremony planning ease.
Make guest comfort top of mind – quick tips
- No one wants to sit through a warm wedding ceremony with the sun in their eyes. Think about the position of the sun during the time of your ceremony and how it affects guest seating.
- Parasols are a sophisticated way to provide your guests with shade.
- A fan that doubles as a ceremony program provides a little breeze.
- And on a warm late afternoon, be sure to have a refreshing water station nearby.
Let your guests know that the ceremony will be held outdoors, so they can plan accordingly for comfort. And if the ceremony site is located on grass or has a more natural path, be sure your guests know. No one wants a high heel stuck in the grass, so opt for wedges, block heels, or even stylish flats if the ceremony is on grass.
More outdoor wedding ceremony dos and don’ts
- Perfumes and colognes can attract curious insects, so save them. And pass the tip along to your guests.
- Strategically placed citronella candles can help deter insects.
- If you’re holding your wedding ceremony on a brisk fall day, a lightweight wool wrap provides cozy guest comfort. Use them for later around Oakhaven’s fireplace.
- And if the skies are grey but not yet raining, provide clear umbrellas just in case.
- Make sure paths to the ceremony site are clearly marked with signage and have a transportation plan, if necessary, for elderly and disabled guests.
The importance of an outdoor wedding ceremony Plan B
A Plan B for your wedding ceremony is crucial. Think of it as a form of insurance. Discuss with your day of coordinator and venue host the timeframe needed from turning your outdoor wedding ceremony into an indoor occasion.
Remember, there may be chairs, arches, and decor that need to come into your venue. Discuss where you can host cocktail time while the staff “turns” the room from ceremony to reception space. Knowing how much time is needed to turn your Plan B into a stunning indoor wedding ceremony is key to your peace of mind. With a little foresight, your Plan B will be perfect.
Oakhaven’s unique outdoor wedding ceremony sites
Our premier North Carolina wedding venue features three incredible ceremony sites. Each has its own seasonal charms. Here’s a quick peek at what Oakhaven offers for an elegant outdoor wedding ceremony. And learn how our professional and capable staff can work with you on a seamless Plan B for your ceremony and reception.
The Signature Oak
For over a century, our Signature Oak has graced the rolling farmland of Oakhaven. Countless couples have made their vows under this majestic tree. The repurposed church pews give this ceremony site an outdoor cathedral feeling.
The wedding party and the bride make their entrance through rustic double doors covered in greenery and down a grass aisle. But you can also “flip the script” and use the doors as a backdrop. But typically, ceremonies are held under the stately tree.
The Grand Dutch Barn Terrace
Adjoining the interior reception space, the paved terrace sets up beautifully with white folding chairs with an aisle that leads to the wrought iron gazebo. Guests will truly appreciate the tranquil beauty of sunset over the gentle hillsides.
Adjacent to the terrace is a covered area that’s perfect for setting up a bar. Provide your guests with passed appetizers while they enjoy a signature drink and the sunset before heading into the Grand Dutch Barn.
The Manor House Gazebo
Wind your way through the blooms with blossoming trees in the background. This elegant path around The Manor House and to the Gazebo is ever-changing from spring through autumn. White chairs on the lush green lawn provide a classic outdoor wedding ceremony experience.
This location is ideally located adjacent to The Manor House which is typically used by the bride and her wedding party. The groom and his party can usually be found at Woodrow’s Cabin across the street or hanging out in the nearby lounge. And guests have comfort with nearby, well-appointed rest rooms.

Your Plan B for a beautiful indoor wedding ceremony
The open floor plan of Oakhaven’s Grand Dutch Barn allows for a quick room turnaround. Tables can be pre-set and placed discreetly to the sides with their chairs set up for a ceremony. Your guests will face the soaring slate fireplace and floor to ceiling windows featuring farmland views.
And remember the adjacent covered patio? Take advantage of that space so Oakhaven’s staff and your caterer can quickly “turn” the room into your dream reception. When you work with an experienced team of professionals, you’re free to relax and be a guest at your own wedding.
