Experience Oakhaven is truly special to its owners. Learn the story of Oakhaven and how this cherished property evolved from family retreat to premier NC wedding destination.
Long before Oakhaven became a destination for weddings and celebrations, it was simply a cherished family retreat—a place of fresh air, open fields, and long summer days. The land has held nearly a century of stories, and each season has added another layer to what Oakhaven is today. This is the history of our farm and how it grew—one generation, one dream, and one heartfelt celebration at a time—into the wedding and event venue known now as Experience Oakhaven. — The Ergish Family
Roots in Tobacco Country – A Summer Home with Big Dreams
The story of Oakhaven begins in 1929 when the property was purchased by the son of Richard H. Dibrell, founder of Dibrell Brothers Tobacco Company. At the time, North Carolina’s rolling fields and tobacco heritage were deeply woven into daily life.
Oakhaven and The English Manor became a place where the family could retreat from the bustle of business and reconnect with the land. Much of the manor still reflects the family’s early years at the 1400-acre farm and estate. This was never just a piece of land; it was a living, breathing place where family memories were made.
The Barn Doors Open
The shift from family farm to wedding venue began in 2007, with three weddings in a barn with dirt floors and no air conditioning. While rough around the edges, couples felt something the moment they walked through those doors. Those early celebrations taught us that people weren’t simply searching for a stunning North Carolina wedding venue. They wanted a place they too could call home.
Then the unthinkable happened. A catastrophic tornado took Oakhaven’s original barn – a structure that held decades of family history and those first, tender wedding memories. It was a profound loss.
Loss Met with Love
But loss, when met with enough love, has a way of becoming something else. The barn was rebuilt to honor the original. It was the guiding design intention. The bones, character, and warmth that made the original irreplaceable were carried forward into today’s space. That same soulfulness is reflected in the refinished floors, elegant details, and modern comforts. The new barn doesn’t pretend the old one didn’t matter. It’s a tribute to it.
Now, Oakhaven is host to more than 40 weddings each year, drawing couples, families, and friends from across the Carolinas, the country, and around the world. But even as the number of events has grown, the heart of Oakhaven’s hospitality has remained the same. Each couple is treated as if their celebration is the only one on the calendar.
Family-Owned, and Proud of It
One of the most meaningful parts of Oakhaven’s story is that it’s always been family land — and still is. Our elegant NC weekend wedding estate is owned and run by Patience Ergish, the great-granddaughter of Richard H Dibrell, and her daughters. They work alongside the Oakhaven team walking the grounds and planning each celebration. And when it comes to the property’s details, Patience gives careful attention to design and decor. And don’t be surprised if you see her working in Oakhaven’s beautiful seasonal gardens when you’re on your tour.
Both family and team know how Oakhaven shifts with each season, using that knowledge to shape experiences that feel native to this place. And everyone’s always looking ahead, dreaming up new ways for couples and guests to linger a little longer, connect a little more deeply, and leave with memories that stay long after the celebration ends.
